In April 2019 I visited a couple of countries in Central America, Panamá and Costa Rica. Here is the report of my Costa Rica visit.
The Costa Rica part of the trip was organized by Go! Tours Costa Rica. I was happy with the organization, everything worked as planned.
I arrived at San Jose International Airport from Panamá. A driver picked me up to bring me to my hotel. Here was the only small glitch in the organization: The driver didn't know exactly where he had to go, he drove in the wrong direction, into heavy traffic, had to turn around, working his way through stop-and-go traffic. It took more than an hour to get to the hotel, instead of a few minutes.
The next morning another driver picked me up and drove to Sierpe in the south, where a boat picked me up and brought me to Drake Bay, where I stayed for three nights.
One of the excursions there was a walk through the Corcovado National Park, with lots of birds. I also saw a tapir for the first time in the wild. The other excursion was a snorkeling boat tour to Caño Island.
After the boat ride back to Sierpe, the driver picked me up again and brought me to Monteverde in the northern part of Costa Rica for two nights.
In Monteverde I visited the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve, again with lots of birds to see. I also did a night walk in Monteverde.
From Monteverde I traveled by bus to Lake Arenal, where a boat picked me up to cross the lake to the Arenal Volcano area, where I stayed for three nights.
Around Arenal Volcano I had a bird watching excursion, an interesting night walk, and an excursion to the Rio Celeste (Blue River).
On the night walk we saw many frogs, including the Red-eyed Tree Frog, a beautifully colored small frog.
The Rio Celeste (Blue River) has a beautiful blue color due to fine sediment that it picks up when flowing across a particular rock formation.
From Arenal Volcano I traveled by bus and then boat to Tortuguero in the north-east of Costa Rica, where I stayed for another two nights.
In Tortuguero I did another interesting night walk, and several boat excursions. Again, we saw a lot of birds around Tortuguero.
From Tortuguero I traveled back to San Jose for the last night close to the airport.
The visit to Costa Rica was mostly about wildlife. I saw a lot of birds, a lot of amphibians, and several reptiles, including venomous snakes.
US citizens don't need a visa, it is easy to get into Costa Rica. They are well set up for tourists, it is an easy country to visit.
All my accomodations there were nice, the meals were good. Prices are somewhat lower than in the USA.
I enjoyed my visit to Costa Rica.
